EN 1092-1-1 Plate flanges for welding – free 3D CAD files, info & dimensions

A plate flange for welding is a type of flange that is slipped over the end of a pipe and then welded in place. A plate flanges for welding has a circular shape and a flat sealing surface. It is typically made of carbon steel or stainless steel, and is available in various sizes and pressure ratings.

This type of flange is often used for low-pressure applications where sealing is not a critical requiremen, such as in water or air supply systems.

The EN 1092-1 is a European standard for flanges that specifies the dimensions, materials, and technical requirements for various types of flanges. A plate flange for welding (also called “slip-on welding flange”) is one of the types defined by this standard and is coded as “type 1”. Within the EN1092-1 standard, Type 1 flanges are the most commonly used flanges.

Main advantage: Low costs

Due to their simpler design, Type 1 flanges are generally more cost-effective compared to other types of flanges. They require fewer machining operations, resulting in lower manufacturing costs.

Advantages of plate flanges for welding

  • Easy to install: Slip-on welding flanges are easy to install and require less time and effort compared to other types of flanges.
  • Cost-effective: Slip-on welding flanges are generally less expensive than other types of flanges, making them a cost-effective option for low-pressure applications.
  • Versatility: Slip-on welding flanges are available in a wide range of sizes and pressure ratings, making them suitable for a variety of applications.
  • Better flow: Slip-on welding flanges have a smooth interior surface that helps to reduce friction and turbulence in the piping system, resulting in better flow rates and lower pressure drops.
  • Reduced stress: Slip-on welding flanges distribute stress evenly across the flange, which reduces the risk of leaks or failure in the piping system.
  • Lower risk of corrosion: Because the flange is welded to the pipe, there is less risk of corrosion or erosion at the flange interface compared to other types of flanges that rely on bolts and gaskets.

Disadvantages of plate flanges for welding

  • Limited pressure rating: Slip-on welding flanges are generally suitable for low-pressure applications, and may not be appropriate for high-pressure systems.
  • Welding expertise required: Slip-on welding flanges require welding to attach them to the pipe, so installation requires welding expertise and equipment.
  • Vulnerability to thermal fatigue: Slip-on welding flanges can be vulnerable to thermal fatigue if they are exposed to cyclic heating and cooling, which can cause stress and cracking at the weld.
  • Limited flexibility: Once a slip-on welding flange is welded to a pipe, it is difficult to remove and may limit the flexibility of the piping system.
  • Higher risk of leaks: Slip-on welding flanges may be more prone to leaks compared to other types of flanges if the welding process is not done correctly or if the flange is not aligned properly.
  • Higher risk of corrosion: Slip-on welding flanges can be more susceptible to corrosion at the weld interface due to the heat-affected zone from the welding process, which may require additional corrosion protection measures.

Industries & applications where plate flanges for welding are used

Plate flanges for welding are widely used in industries that require low-pressure piping systems, and where a cost-effective, easy to install, and versatile flange option is required.

  • Oil and gas industry: Slip-on welding flanges are used in pipelines, refineries, and petrochemical plants for low-pressure applications.
  • Water and wastewater treatment: Slip-on welding flanges are used in water and wastewater treatment plants for low-pressure applications.
  • Chemical industry: Slip-on welding flanges are used in chemical processing plants for low-pressure applications.
  • HVAC industry: Slip-on welding flanges are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems for low-pressure applications.
  • Power generation industry: Slip-on welding flanges are used in power generation plants for low-pressure steam and water applications.
  • Food and beverage industry: Slip-on welding flanges are used in food and beverage processing plants for low-pressure applications.

The three most commonly used materials for plate flanges

  1. Carbon Steel: Carbon steel is a widely used material for flanges due to its affordability, good mechanical properties, and versatility. Flanges made of carbon steel are suitable for a wide range of applications and pressure ratings.
  2. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is another popular material for EN1092-1 flanges. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for applications where the flange will come into contact with corrosive substances or environments. Stainless steel flanges are commonly used in industries such as chemical processing, food processing, and offshore oil and gas.
  3. Alloy Steel: Alloy steel flanges are chosen when additional strength, higher temperature resistance, or specific mechanical properties are required. These flanges are often used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications, such as power generation plants, petrochemical refineries, and oil and gas pipelines.

Are plate flanges for welding readily available?

In general, EN1092-1 type 1 flanges are considered standard components that are often stocked by manufacturers, distributors and suppliers of industrial equipment. These flanges are widely used in various applications and industries, including chemical, oil and gas, power and water treatment.

However, the availability of EN1092-1 Type 1 flanges may vary depending on the specific size, pressure rating and material type you require. Popular sizes and standard pressure classes tend to have a higher chance of being readily available.
