EN 1092-1-11 Welding neck flanges – free 3D CAD files + all info & dimensions

A welding neck flange is a type of flange that is designed to be welded to a pipe or fitting. It has a long tapered hub that is used to connect the flange to the pipe or fitting, and it has a flat, circular face that is used to create a tight seal with the gasket.

The EN 1092-1 is a European standard for flanges that specifies the dimensions, materials, and technical requirements for various types of flanges. A welding neck flange (also called “weld neck flange”) is one of the types defined by this standard and is coded as “type 11”.

Main advantage: Strong and secure

As the name suggests, welding neck flanges are designed for easy welding. The long neck provides an extended area for welding, allowing for a stronger and more secure joint between the flange and the pipe or fitting. This makes them a preferred choice for critical applications where leak prevention and structural integrity are crucial.

Advantages of welding neck flanges

  • Strong and Durable Connection: Welding neck flanges provide a strong and durable connection between pipes, fittings, or other equipment. The long tapered hub of the flange connects to the pipe or fitting, creating a secure and tight fit. The weld between the flange and the pipe or fitting is also very strong, providing a long-lasting and reliable connection.
  • Resistant to Leakage: Welding neck flanges are designed to provide a leak-free seal. The flat circular face of the flange creates a tight seal with the gasket, preventing any leaks from occurring.
  • Suitable for High-Pressure and High-Temperature Applications: Welding neck flanges are commonly used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications. The strong connection and leak-free seal provided by the flange make it ideal for use in these demanding environments.
  • Versatility: Welding neck flanges are available in a wide range of sizes and materials, making them suitable for a wide variety of applications. They can be made from materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum, and can be used with pipes or fittings made from the same or different materials.
  • Compatibility with Various Flange-Face Types: Welding neck flanges can be used with different types of flange-face designs, such as raised face, flat face, tongue and groove, and ring joint face. This provides flexibility in the selection of the flange-face type, depending on the application and the type of gasket being used.

Disadvantages of welding neck flanges

  • Cost: Welding neck flanges can be more expensive than other types of flanges due to their complex design and the need for skilled labor to install them.
  • Time-Consuming Installation: Welding neck flanges require more time to install than other types of flanges. The welding process is time-consuming and requires specialized equipment and trained personnel.
  • Prone to Stress Concentration: The long tapered hub of the welding neck flange can cause stress concentration at the base of the hub, which can lead to cracks and other defects over time. This is especially true in high-stress applications, where the repeated heating and cooling cycles can cause the flange to deform or crack.
  • Limited Flexibility: Welding neck flanges are not as flexible as other types of flanges, as they require precise alignment between the flange and the pipe or fitting. This can make it more difficult to install or remove the flange in tight spaces or in applications where the position of the piping system may need to be adjusted over time.
  • Corrosion: Welding neck flanges can be prone to corrosion, especially in applications where the fluid being transported is corrosive. This can lead to pitting, rusting, and other forms of damage that can compromise the integrity of the flange over time.

Industries & applications where welding neck flanges are used

Welding neck flanges are used in a wide variety of industries and applications where strong, leak-free connections between pipes, fittings and other equipment are required. Some examples of applications where welding neck flanges are often used are:

  • Oil and gas industry: Welding neck flanges are used in oil and gas pipelines and installations, where they are exposed to high temperatures, pressures and corrosive substances.
  • Chemical Industry: Welding neck flanges are commonly used in the chemical industry, where they are used in piping and equipment for handling aggressive chemicals.
  • Water Treatment: Welding neck flanges are used in water treatment plants, where they are used to connect pipes and fittings that are under high pressure.
  • Food and Beverage Industry: Welding neck flanges are used in the food and beverage industry where they are used to connect pipes and equipment that come into contact with food.
  • Building and Construction: Welding neck flanges are used in the building and construction industry for HVAC systems, plumbing, and other applications where leak-free connections are required.

In general, welding neck flanges are used in applications where high pressures, temperatures, and corrosives pose a challenge to other types of flanges. Welding neck flanges provide a strong and reliable connection that can withstand these challenges and are therefore widely used in these demanding applications.

The three most commonly used materials for welding neck flanges

  1. Carbon Steel: Carbon steel is a widely used material for flanges due to its affordability, good mechanical properties, and versatility. Flanges made of carbon steel are suitable for a wide range of applications and pressure ratings.
  2. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is another popular material for EN1092-1 flanges. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for applications where the flange will come into contact with corrosive substances or environments. Stainless steel flanges are commonly used in industries such as chemical processing, food processing, and offshore oil and gas.
  3. Alloy Steel: Alloy steel flanges are chosen when additional strength, higher temperature resistance, or specific mechanical properties are required. These flanges are often used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications, such as power generation plants, petrochemical refineries, and oil and gas pipelines.

Are welding neck flanges readily available?

Yes! welding neck flanges are generally readily available. They are among the most common and widely used types of flanges, and they are extensively utilized in various industrial sectors worldwide. As a result, they are typically easily accessible from pipeline material suppliers, flange manufacturers, and distributors.

You can find welding neck flanges at specialized industrial component suppliers, pipeline suppliers, flange manufacturers, and general construction material suppliers. Additionally, there are online platforms where you can find and order a wide range of flanges, including welding neck flanges.

When obtaining welding neck flanges, it is important to consider the requirements of your specific project, such as the desired pressure class, dimensions, and material. This will help you select the appropriate flanges that meet the specific needs of your application.

It is always advisable to consult reliable suppliers who deliver high-quality flanges and are knowledgeable about the relevant standards and specifications. This way, you can ensure the quality and suitability of the welding neck flanges for your project.
