EN 1092-1-2 Loose plate flanges – free 3D CAD files, info & dimensions

Loose plate flange with type 32 collar

Loose plate flange with type 33 collar

A loose flange is a flange without a collar, which means it does not have a raised ring or lip around the borehole. Instead, it has a flat face with bolt holes drilled through it to connect to another flange or equipment. These flanges are designed to be used with an EN 1092-1 standard collar.

Loose flanges are commonly used in low-pressure applications, such as water supply systems, ventilation systems, and pipelines for non-corrosive fluids. They are also used in industries such as chemical, petrochemical, and food processing, where they are required to connect equipment or pipelines together securely.

The EN 1092-1 is a European standard for flanges that specifies the dimensions, materials, and technical requirements for various types of flanges. A loose plate flange (also called ” slip-on flange) is one of the types defined by this standard and is coded as “type 2”.

Main advantage: Easy to install

Loose flanges are easy to install and remove because they can be rotated. This means that the flange can be easily aligned and bolted to another flange or equipment without the need for special tools or equipment.

Advantages of loose plate flanges

  • Cost-effective: Loose flanges are less expensive than other types of flanges, such as weld neck flanges. This makes them an attractive option for low-pressure applications or where cost is a significant factor.
  • Versatility: Loose flanges are versatile and can be used in a variety of applications, including water supply systems, ventilation systems, and pipelines for non-corrosive fluids.
  • Easy to replace: In the event of damage or wear, a loose flange can be easily replaced without having to replace the entire piping system.
  • Reduced stress: Loose flanges distribute stress evenly across the flange face, which reduces the risk of damage to the piping system.
  • Flexibility: Loose flanges provide flexibility in piping systems, allowing for minor misalignments or movements between the piping and the equipment.

Disadvantages of loose plate flanges

  • Limited pressure rating: Loose flanges are generally limited to low-pressure applications. They are not suitable for high-pressure systems, as the lack of a collar means that the flange may not be able to withstand the forces exerted by the fluid.
  • Limited compatibility: Loose flanges may not be compatible with certain types of piping or equipment, as they require a separate collar to be installed.
  • Higher risk of leakage: Because loose flanges do not have a collar, there is a higher risk of fluid leakage at the joint. This can be mitigated by using an appropriate gasket and tightening the bolts properly.
  • Limited corrosion resistance: Loose flanges may not be suitable for use in corrosive environments, as the lack of a collar can make it more difficult to protect the flange from corrosion.
  • Limited sealing capability: Loose flanges are generally not suitable for applications that require a high degree of sealing, as the flange face is flat and does not provide the same level of sealing as other types of flanges.

Industries & applications where loose plate flanges are used

Loose flanges are commonly used in low-pressure applications where cost and ease of installation are important factors. They are generally not suitable for high-pressure or corrosive environments, where other types of flanges may be a better choice.

  • Water supply and treatment: Loose flanges are commonly used in water supply and treatment systems, where low-pressure applications are typical.
  • Chemical and petrochemical: Loose flanges are used in chemical and petrochemical industries, where they are used to connect equipment or pipelines that carry non-corrosive fluids.
  • Food processing: Loose flanges are used in food processing industries to connect pipelines that carry non-corrosive fluids, such as water or food products.
  • HVAC: Loose flanges are used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to connect ductwork and equipment.
  • Pharmaceutical: Loose flanges are used in pharmaceutical industries to connect pipelines that carry non-corrosive fluids, such as water or pharmaceutical products.
  • Pulp and paper: Loose flanges are used in pulp and paper industries to connect pipelines that carry non-corrosive fluids, such as water or pulp.
  • Mining: Loose flanges are used in mining industries to connect pipelines that carry non-corrosive fluids, such as water or minerals.

The three most commonly used materials for loose plate flanges

  1. Carbon Steel: Carbon steel is a widely used material for flanges due to its affordability, good mechanical properties, and versatility. Flanges made of carbon steel are suitable for a wide range of applications and pressure ratings.
  2. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is another popular material for EN1092-1 flanges. It offers excellent corrosion resistance, making it suitable for applications where the flange will come into contact with corrosive substances or environments. Stainless steel flanges are commonly used in industries such as chemical processing, food processing, and offshore oil and gas.
  3. Alloy Steel: Alloy steel flanges are chosen when additional strength, higher temperature resistance, or specific mechanical properties are required. These flanges are often used in high-pressure and high-temperature applications, such as power generation plants, petrochemical refineries, and oil and gas pipelines.

Are loose plate flanges readily available?

The availability of EN1092-1 type 2 flanges can vary depending on various factors, such as the specific size, pressure class, material type, and the region you’re looking in.

Generally, suppliers of flanges often have a stock of standard sizes and pressure classes because these are more frequently requested. Popular sizes and standard pressure classes are therefore more likely to be readily available.

However, if you’re looking for less common sizes, higher pressure classes, or specific material types, it’s possible that the flanges may not always be available in stock. In such cases, suppliers can often order the required flanges from manufacturers or other sources.
